Every single poker player, at one time or another, is going to have to ask that question: How many chips do you have in your hand? This is a very important question to ask, and the answer might be surprising. However, in order to get the real answers, you will need to look at some critical aspects of poker. That is, if you know the right questions to ask when you are figuring out how many chips you should have in your hand. Here is how to figure it out.

The first question to ask yourself is: What is your starting hand strength? If you are holding any cards other than the ones you are checking, that hand strength number is what will tell you how many chips you should be throwing at the pot when you are ready to act. It doesn’t matter if you have a good hand or not. What matters is the starting hand strength number for that hand. Once you know this, then you can move onto the other questions.

Second question – What are your numbers from your last two opponents that you’ve had a chance to play against? If you’ve played against someone with a low number, then obviously they probably aren’t as big of a challenge as someone who has a high number. So if you’ve got a low number from someone, then you’ve got a good chance at winning the pot. But remember – you don’t want to rely on just your hand, even if you think it might have a nice return; you’ll usually be wrong.

Third question – What is your second number from your last three opponents? Are you tied for third or fourth most with them? If so, then you’ve got a pretty good shot at winning. You also might want to check if you’ve got a hand that will cause them to fold if they don’t have to. There are a lot of possible hands that will cause people to fold to you, so you’ll want to look around for these. Be careful to always protect your hand as much as possible.

Fourth question – Do you have any idea what cards your opponent has laid on the table right now? Just because you’re starting with a tight start doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be checking to see what they’ve got. In fact, most aggressive players will start raising the betting slowly to try and make it more likely that they can get a good hand and make some money off it. Once they have few cards to act, they will often fold, leaving you to scoop up the pot.
